Methodology to support WRAP’s analysis of the national cost implications of businesses achieving higher recycling rates.

Project

Project undertaken in support of WRAP’s work assessing the contribution that businesses in the municipal sector (producing waste streams similar to household waste) might make to achieving future higher national recycling targets.  The output was a methodology that WRAP could follow to generate high-level cost estimates of increased recycling in the municipal sector, identifying data sources (and gaps).  This piece of work led on to further work engaging with industry, local authority and Business Improvement District stakeholders around options to help businesses recycle more, whilst minimising costs.


Key skills

Expertise in trade waste service modelling (combining business information with sector-based arising and compositional data, along with financial impact analysis) enabled development of a workable method in a short timescale. The work also highlighted sectors to WRAP where data is limited, informing future survey work.
